How was the Periscope app supposed to work?

Periscope was a popular live video streaming app allowing users to share real-time experiences with their audience. It significantly shaped the live-streaming landscape and paved the way for integrating live video features into social media platforms like Twitter. Developed by Kayvon Beykpour and Joe Bernstein and later acquired by Twitter Inc., Periscope enabled users to start broadcasting live videos from their mobile phones, fostering real-time interaction and connection with their audience.

With Periscope, users had the power to share their experiences instantly, leveraging the app's live broadcasting capabilities. Whether it was capturing a special moment, providing behind-the-scenes glimpses, or reporting breaking news, Periscope allowed individuals to stream videos in real-time, bridging the gap between content creators and viewers.

The app gained immense popularity and amassed millions of users worldwide. Both iOS and Android users could access Periscope through the App Store and Google Play, respectively. Through their Twitter accounts, users could easily link their Periscope accounts and seamlessly share their live broadcasts with their Twitter followers, expanding their reach.

Periscope's intuitive interface empowered users to explore and engage with various live broadcasts. Viewers had the ability to join video chat rooms, send messages, and express their appreciation through Super Hearts. This feature allowed them to send virtual currency as a form of support. The hearts not only served as an interactive tool but also highlighted the popularity and engagement of the broadcast.

To ensure a safe and inclusive environment, Periscope implemented community guidelines to prevent the dissemination of illegal content and maintain the integrity of the platform. These guidelines addressed issues such as harassment, violence, and copyright infringement, emphasizing responsible use and respectful behavior within the community.

Periscope also introduced in-app purchases, allowing users to support their favorite broadcasters through financial contributions. This feature allowed content creators to monetize their efforts and build a sustainable presence on the platform.

Despite its initial success, Periscope faced challenges and ultimately made the decision to shut down. The closure was announced in December 2020, with the app ceasing operations in March 2021. While Periscope shut down, Twitter integrated live streaming capabilities directly into its platform, enabling users to continue broadcasting and engaging with their audience through Twitter's ecosystem.

Periscope was pivotal in shaping the live-streaming landscape, providing a platform for millions of users to share real-time experiences. Although the app is no longer available, its impact on the world of live broadcasting is undeniable, and its innovative approach to social networking continues to influence the digital realm.
